The Right Math at Every Stage

Each stage has a few ideas that later math depends on. We make sure those are solid before moving on.

Grades 4–6: Number sense and fractions

Fractions, decimals, and negative numbers are where most later trouble in algebra begins. Students learn what a fraction really is and why each rule works, and they practice turning word problems into math.

Grades 6–8: Pre-Algebra and accelerated math

Ratios, expressions, and equations, taught so they make sense. Students aiming for honors or accelerated math prepare for district placement by filling the gaps they actually have. Algebra 1 and Geometry for students who are ahead.

Grades 9–12: Algebra 1 to Calculus

Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus, including honors and Integrated Math, then AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, and Multivariable Calculus. Plus SAT Math and AMC and AIME prep.

The why

What Learning the Why Looks Like in Math

Most students can follow the steps. Fewer can explain why the steps work, and that is what they need when a problem looks new.

Grades 5–6

Dividing fractions

The how

“Keep, change, flip.”

The why

3 ÷ 1/4 asks how many quarters fit into 3. There are four in each whole, so the answer is 12. Flipping is a shortcut for that question, and a student who knows the question can check the shortcut.

Grades 7–9

Solving equations

The how

“Move the 5 to the other side and change its sign.”

The why

An equation says two amounts are equal. Subtracting 5 from both sides keeps them equal. A student who sees this can solve equations that look nothing like the ones on the worksheet.

Algebra 1 and beyond

Slope

The how

“Rise over run.”

The why

Slope is how much one quantity changes for each one-unit change in the other: dollars per hour, miles per gallon. That meaning carries all the way into calculus, where a derivative is a slope.

Math Placement in Fullerton-Area Schools

Every district sets its own placement rules, and they change from year to year. Here is how the districts our families come from decide, according to their own 2025–26 and 2026–27 documents. Always confirm the current year with your school counselor.

Fullerton School District

Students are assessed at the end of 6th grade for 7th-grade math placement, along with grades and teacher input. Honors math runs at the junior highs, and Algebra 1 in 8th grade is the usual accelerated step. A GATE label alone no longer means honors placement.

Fullerton Joint Union High School District

Ninth-grade math is placed by the 8th-grade course and grade, and at some schools i-Ready scores. At Sunny Hills, a C or better in 8th-grade Algebra leads to Geometry, and a B or better in Honors Geometry leads to Honors Algebra 2.

Placentia-Yorba Linda USD

Acceleration can begin in 5th grade with Math 6/7. Placement uses i-Ready percentiles, CAASPP, grades, and a challenge test that is offered once, in June or July, with a cutoff around 90%.

Class types

Two Ways to Learn

After the free reasoning assessment, we recommend the class type that fits your child’s goals.

Preview Class

Learn the course before school teaches it.

A small group works through next semester’s or next year’s math a step ahead of school, so there is time to understand each idea before school gets to it.

  • Taught with our own curriculum
  • Small groups of up to 6 students
  • Taught by experienced teachers, including our Director of Math, Insung Whang

Grade Maintenance Class

Keep up with your school course and understand it.

Classes follow your child’s own syllabus, homework, and test dates, and fix gaps while they are still small.

  • One-on-one or a small group
  • No more than two school schedules in one class
  • Prep for unit tests and finals

In person or online

At our Fullerton center, or live on Zoom with any of our math teachers.

Fall, spring, and summer

Classes run from fall through spring, plus an 8-week summer intensive.

Reviews

What Families Say About Math

In the words of ICMS parents and students, from our Google reviews.

My son loves Mr. Whang’s math classes! He always tells me how funny Mr. Whang is and how much fun he has in class. High school is stressful enough, so it’s wonderful to see him enjoying math while actually learning and understanding the material.

Lilian Z. · Parent

They don’t just teach formulas, but they make sure students truly understand the concepts. The explanations are always clear, and they take time to answer every question thoroughly. … My daughter not only improved in grades but also developed a much more positive attitude toward math.

J. I. · Parent

From the outset, his teaching environment was welcoming and focused on understanding rather than memorization. … Thanks to his diligent and brilliant teaching, starting from the 5th grade onward, I’ve never worried about math, even as I went into the difficult math AP classes.

FAQ

Questions Parents Ask About Math

Have a question that is not here? Ask us during your free consultation.

What grades and math courses do you teach?

Grades 4 through 12: 4th- and 5th-grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus (including honors, AP Precalculus, and Integrated Math I, II, and III), then AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, and Multivariable Calculus. We also prepare students for SAT Math and the AMC and AIME competitions.

How do I know if my child is ready for accelerated math or Algebra 1 in 8th grade?

It depends more on understanding than on grade level. A child who is ready can explain why the rules for fractions and negative numbers work, can turn a word problem into an equation, and does not need a new memorized procedure for every type of problem. Our free reasoning assessment shows where your child stands, and we will tell you honestly whether to accelerate now or build the foundation first.

Do you help students prepare for district math placement tests?

Yes. A placement test checks whether a student understands the math from earlier grades, so we prepare students by finding and filling those gaps and by previewing the course they are aiming for. Near the test, they practice under test-like timing. Every district uses different tests, dates, and cutoffs, so we also help families find out their own district’s rules early.

How is a class here different from a learning center or a worksheet program?

Many learning centers have each student work through an individual plan while instructors help several students at once. Our classes work differently. One teacher leads a small group of up to six through each idea, checks every student’s reasoning during the session, and stays with the same group through the term. Lessons follow either our own curriculum or your child’s school course, students in Preview Classes get homework, and parents get a monthly progress report.

Do you follow my child’s school curriculum?

It depends on the goal. In a Preview Class, students learn ahead of school with our own curriculum. In a Grade Maintenance Class, we follow your child’s school course closely: the same syllabus, homework, and test dates.

Where are you, and do you teach online?

Our center is at 2009 W Commonwealth Ave, Suite E, Fullerton, CA 92833. We are open Monday to Friday from 3 to 9 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 7 pm. Most of our younger students attend elementary and middle schools in and around Fullerton. More than 40% of our students learn live on Zoom, from nearby cities to other states and Canada.
