AP Biology Tutoring

AP Biology is one connected story. We teach students to see the big picture, and our Preview Class finishes the course by the end of March, leaving two months for exam review.

See the Big Picture

Photosynthesis only makes sense next to cellular respiration, and both only make sense inside an ecosystem. The AP exam rewards students who see those connections, so every new concept is placed in the larger story before students learn its details.

Connect the units

Students learn how the energy captured in photosynthesis flows through cellular respiration and on through an ecosystem. Seeing the links is what makes the details stick.

Statistics and experimental design

Data analysis, statistics, and experimental design run through the entire AP exam, yet many schools barely teach them. We build them into Units 1 through 3, so students are comfortable with data long before May.

Then practice, a lot

Understanding comes first. Then students work through many AP-style questions, including free-response, to turn that understanding into a strong score.

The Middle of the Course: Units 3–6

Units 1, 2, 7, and 8 usually feel manageable. From Unit 3 on, the number of concepts grows quickly. Each one is complex on its own, and students have to connect them into one story. That is where most students start to struggle, and where seeing the big picture matters most.

Unit 3Cellular Energetics

Enzymes, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration. Seen as one energy story, from light to sugar to ATP, the steps stop being a list to memorize.

Unit 4Cell Communication and Cell Cycle

Signal transduction, feedback, and the cell cycle. When students see a signal as a chain of cause and effect, they can predict what happens when one link breaks.

Unit 5Heredity

Meiosis and inheritance. When students connect what chromosomes do in meiosis to the ratios in a Punnett square, genetics becomes logic, not guesswork.

Unit 6Gene Expression and Regulation

Replication, transcription, translation, and gene regulation. Students who follow information from DNA to protein can explain how one mutation changes a cell.

Two Ways to Learn

Choose a Preview Class to learn AP Biology before school teaches it, or a Grade Maintenance Class to keep up with the course your child is taking now. After the free diagnostic assessment, we recommend the one that fits your child’s goals.

Preview Class

Learn the course before school teaches it.

For students who want to master a course ahead of their school class. A small group moves through the material together, a step ahead of the school calendar, so there is time to understand why, not just keep up.

  • Small groups of up to 6 students
  • Taught by experienced teachers, including our director, Chi Ji

How it works: One 90-minute class a week. Students watch a short video before class, and class time goes to discussion and problem solving. The course is finished by the end of March, leaving April and May for AP exam review.

Grade Maintenance Class

Keep up with your school course, and truly understand it.

For students who want steady support in the course they are taking now. Every school moves at its own pace, so these classes follow your child’s own syllabus, homework, and test dates.

  • One-on-one or a small group
  • No more than two school schedules in one class, so every student’s course gets real attention
  • Follows your school’s pace and test calendar
  • Closes gaps as they appear, before they grow

What Families Say

In the words of ICMS parents and students.

Jen Y. · Student

… By explaining the principles in an easy way and always briefly reviewing the key points of previous classes, he created an atmosphere of independent exploration in science and math subjects, and our entire family is satisfied.

Sungjun Y. · Parent

Parent

Chi is a wonderful teacher. He dedicates time and care into teaching his students. He is very empathetic and tries very hard to help the student succeed. I would highly recommend Chi.

Jesse C. · Student

Parent

Mr. Chi’s tutoring class has been incredibly helpful and has greatly helped my academics, strongly recommend.

AP Biology Questions

Common questions from parents.

When does the AP Biology Preview Class finish?

By the end of March. It meets for one 90-minute class a week. Students watch a short video before class, and class time goes to discussion and problem solving. April and May are left for AP exam review.

My child’s school doesn’t teach much statistics. Will that hurt on the exam?

It can, because data analysis appears throughout the AP Biology exam. We teach the statistics and experimental design students need in Units 1 through 3, so they are ready well before May.

Is it in person or online?

Both. Classes meet at our Fullerton center or live on Zoom with the same teachers. More than 40% of our students learn live on Zoom, from nearby cities to other states and Canada.
