AP Chemistry Tutoring

We teach students to see AP Chemistry at the molecular level, so even the toughest units make sense. Small groups or one-on-one, in Fullerton or live on Zoom.

Chemistry Happens at the Molecular Level

Every equation in AP Chemistry describes something happening between particles too small to see. Students who can picture those particles understand why reactions behave the way they do. Students who only memorize formulas hit a wall, usually in the second semester.

See the particles

Students learn to picture what molecules and ions are actually doing. Once they can see it, an equation describes something real instead of something to memorize.

Explain it back

We check understanding through conversation, not just answers. Students explain ideas in their own words, and after solving a problem they walk us through how they found the answer. If they can explain it, they understand it. If not, we find the gap early.

Then practice like the exam

Once the concept is clear, students work through AP-style multiple-choice and free-response questions, so understanding turns into points on exam day.

The Second Semester: Units 6, 7 & 8

Most students find the second semester of AP Chemistry the hardest. These units build on everything before them, and Units 7 and 8 are especially difficult without the ability to picture what is happening at the molecular level.

Unit 6Thermochemistry

Heat, enthalpy, and calorimetry. Students need to see where energy is stored and released in chemical bonds, not just plug numbers into q = mcΔT.

Unit 7Equilibrium

Reactions that run in both directions at once. With a molecular picture, Le Chatelier’s principle and K become behavior students can predict instead of rules they memorize.

Unit 8Acids and Bases

pH, buffers, and titrations. Students who can picture which particles are in the solution solve these problems with confidence. Students who memorize formulas tend to get lost.

Two Ways to Learn

Choose a Preview Class to learn AP Chemistry before school teaches it, or a Grade Maintenance Class to keep up with the course your child is taking now. The AP Chemistry Preview Class starts in the summer, a step ahead of the school year. After the free diagnostic assessment, we recommend the one that fits your child’s goals.

Preview Class

Learn the course before school teaches it.

For students who want to master a course ahead of their school class. A small group moves through the material together, a step ahead of the school calendar, so there is time to understand why, not just keep up.

  • Small groups of up to 6 students
  • Taught by experienced teachers, including our director, Chi Ji

Grade Maintenance Class

Keep up with your school course, and truly understand it.

For students who want steady support in the course they are taking now. Every school moves at its own pace, so these classes follow your child’s own syllabus, homework, and test dates.

  • One-on-one or a small group
  • No more than two school schedules in one class, so every student’s course gets real attention
  • Follows your school’s pace and test calendar
  • Closes gaps as they appear, before they grow

What Families Say

In the words of ICMS parents and students.

My son had Mr.Chi AP Chemistry class this summer and I like his way of teaching. He makes the student give a presentation, through which he helps the student fully understand the material and concepts. Also I like his personality. He is a very passionate and energetic and polite, so he quickly builds good relationships with my son.

Hyeo C. · Parent

When I first started taking AP Chemistry it was very different from normal chemistry. … He explains complex ideas in a way that is fully simplified and understandable. My grades have been up since I started tutoring with Mr Chi and honestly AP Chem started to be a more fun and enjoyable class since I started to understand it more.

Lia · Student

Seungyeon P. · Student

I love Mr Chi!! I receive tutoring from him for AP Chem but is also able to help me with other subjects when needed. He makes tough stuff easy to understand and is also able to make it fun! With his help, I’m doing way better in my chem class and grades have improved.

Jina · Student

I am a sophomore in high school and currently getting tutored by Mr. Chi twice a week. He is a great teacher, especially with chemistry. He explains thoroughly using examples, which makes it very easy for me to understand.

Soobin Y. · Student

We are extremely happy with the way Mr Chi is tutoring Chemistry AP to my daughter. She is able to maintain good grades through out the year in AP Chem Class. Mr Chi is extremely helpful.

AP Chemistry Questions

Common questions from parents.

When should my child start AP Chemistry tutoring?

Many families start in the summer with our AP Chemistry Preview Class, so the school year is spent understanding the material instead of catching up. Others join during the year, often before the second-semester units. Either way, a free diagnostic assessment shows us where to begin.

Do you follow my child’s school syllabus?

In a Grade Maintenance Class, yes. We follow your child’s own syllabus, homework, and test dates. A Preview Class moves through the AP course a step ahead of the school calendar.

Is it in person or online?

Both. Classes meet at our Fullerton center or live on Zoom with the same teachers. More than 40% of our students learn live on Zoom, from nearby cities to other states and Canada.
